“The Association of Websites in Lebanon addressed the representatives who will vote tomorrow, Wednesday, on the draft new media law, calling for reconsidering the vote on it, and refraining from approving it in its current form, in order to make way for amendments that preserve what remains of the profession. The group pointed out that its objection is focused in particular on the fourth paragraph of Article (61), which relates to the conditions for creating websites and who has the right to be responsible for them, stressing that this formula opens the door wide for anyone to create a website, without requiring the availability of the minimum professional components or the necessary editorial and media structure. He explained that this article does not reflect the reality of solid electronic media institutions in Lebanon, which operate within clear editorial structures and adhere to the principles, ethics and professional standards of the profession, stressing that passing it legitimizes media chaos and opens the way for those who do not possess the competence or professional responsibility. The association pointed out that the draft law includes other articles that raise serious concerns, as it may cause direct harm to media work and freedom of expression in Lebanon, recalling that the Websites Association had praised, in a previous statement, the step taken by the Press Syndicate to regulate the website sector, stressing the importance of journalists joining the Editors Syndicate as it is the professional reference that determines the identity of the journalist and protects his rights. The gathering concluded by calling on the representatives not to vote on the draft law in its current form, indicating that its approval will have serious negative repercussions on the future of the Lebanese media, considering that its approval will lead to the weakening of professional media institutions.
